AS Junior Tennis players dominate Samoa’s first Junior Open Tennis Tournament

The American Samoa Tennis Association (ASTA) recently sent a team of 17 Junior Tennis players to compete in the 1st Samoa Junior Open Tennis Tournament during the Thanksgiving weekend.

“Our Junior Tennis players did a fantastic job at the tournament and we are so proud of them,” said ASTA President, Billy Young. “The ASTA dominated the tournament winning in every division except for two. They did a fantastic job in Samoa. I would also like to give a special thank you to the Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, Mr. Samana Semo Ve’ave’a.

The ASTA  is very grateful for the director and his ongoing support promoting sports here in American Samoa. Thank you,” said Young. Young went on to say that he was equally proud of what two Junior Tennis players did in Maui, Hawaii in a recent tournament where they competed.

The two ASTA Junior Tennis players he referred to were ASTA Junior Tennis player Larry Magalasin and Kevin Maukoloa, who dominated the Junior Open in the DT-Wailuku Fall Jr. Open Tennis Tournament in Maui, Hawaii November 23-25.

 Maukoloa won the 14 and under boys division, while Magalasin cruised to victory in the 12 and under boys division. They then teamed up to take the win in the 14 and under Boys Doubles.

Here are the results of the 1st Samoa Junior Open Tennis Tournament:

15 & Under Boys:   Juma Vigas (Am. Samoa) defeated Carlos Ho Ching (Am. Samoa): 6-4, 7-5

12 & Under Boys:   Toa Herdrich (Am. Samoa) defeated Timothy Gayapa (Am. Samoa): 6-2, 6-2

12 & Under Girls:    Michelle Miller (Am. Samoa) defeated Jezabel (Samoa): 2-6, 7-5, 10-4

10 & Under Boys:   After Round Robin Play, John Paul Lim (Am. Samoa) finished second overall, with Tupu Herdrich (Am. Samoa) Taking third overall.

10 & Under Girls:    Mychaela Miller (Am. Samoa) won her division.

Team American Samoa won the overall team competition by 5 points over Samoa: 52-47

14 & Under Boys:

Kevin Maukoloa defeated Darwin Hu: 6-1, 6-1

Reyn Miyagawa defeated Mackenzie Wilson: 6-1, 6-1

Kevin Maukoloa defeated Reyn Miyagawa: 6-4, 6-1

Darwin Hu defeated Mackenzie Wilson: 6-4, 6-1

12 & Under Boys:

Larry Magalasin defeated Devon Baldwin: 6-2, 6-0

Cody Ching defeated Kyle Killett: 6-2, 6-2

Devon Baldwin defeated Cody Ching: 6-1, 6-4

Larry Magalasin defeated Kyle Killett: 6-2, 6-2

14 & Under Boys Doubles:

Magalasin/Maukoloa defeated Hu/Ikehara: 6-2, 6-2

Hu/Ikehara defeated Rodriguez/Wu: 6-0, 6-0

Magalasin/Maukoloa defeated Heaven/Miyagawa: 7-6 (6), 6-4

Hu/Ikehara defeated Velasco/Wilson: 7-5, 6-3
