One of the many activities being spearheaded by the American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC) for Olympic Day - set to be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium on Saturday, June 24 - is a “Logo Design Contest.”

Olympic Day, which coincides with ASNOC’s planned activities for Sports Month 2017, is celebrated every year in June by millions of people in more than 200 countries worldwide, to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games in 1894.

The mission is “to promote fitness, well-being, culture and education, while promoting the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.”

Those interested in submitting their creation for a new ASNOC logo for Team American Samoa must include two elements in their artwork.

First and foremost, the design must include the Olympic symbol, represented by the five interlaced rings of equal dimensions, which must be shown in its entirety and must not be altered in any way.

Additionally, no other element can be inserted into the protected rectangle area surrounding the rings.

Submissions must also include a distinctive national element. “This element shall be designed in such a way that it clearly identifies the emblem as being connected with American Samoa.”

The distinctive national element should be appealing “but not too sophisticated from a design perspective in order to allow easy reproduction.”

Interested individuals must also provide a brief explanation of their elements, including but not limited to the significance of the color, shapes, symbols and/or other aspects that have meaning.

The winning entry will receive $500 and Team American Samoa apparel.

All submissions must be turned in to the ASNOC office at the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Tafuna by June 23.

In addition to the “Logo Design Contest,” ASNOC is also hosting an Island-Wide Car Show, the first of its kind in a decade. This is a golden opportunity for all local car junkies to show off their rides.

Categories for the Car Show are as follows:

  • Best Car
  • Best Truck
  • Best Motorcycle
  • Best Sound System
  • Best ‘Other’

Registration is free and space is limited so entrants will be selected on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Interested individuals are reminded that a mandatory pre-day setup meeting will be held at the Stadium at 3 p.m. on June 23.

All businesses, organizations, agencies, and departments who want to give back to the community through presentations and distribution of valuable information are welcomed to register for a free tent space.

One of the highlights of this year’s event includes the first ever Samoan Ninja obstacle course.

In addition to fun games, live entertainment, and various ethnic food that will be available that day, kids will enjoy the animal exhibition which will feature pigs, cows, and horses. Even farmers will be out there showing off their produce items.

The agenda for the June 24 Olympic Day is as follows:

  • 4 a.m. - All gates open (set up)
  • 5 a.m. - 5k/10k registration
  • 6 a.m. - Walk/run activities begin
  • 7 a.m. - Set-up gates close
  • 8 a.m. - Official opening/parade
  • 2 p.m. - Program closing

Registration forms are available at the ASNOC Office, South Pacific Watersports (SPW) in Utulei, and the Dept. of Youth and Women’s Affairs (DYWA) at the Pago Pago Community Youth Center.

All of the Sports Month 2017 and Olympic Day activities are free of charge and open to the general public.
