Government holiday set for Monday — President’s Day

Local and federal government offices in the territory will be closed Monday for President’s Day, a national holiday.

ASG employees required to work will be paid in accordance with local rules and regulations. Also closed Monday are the two private banks and some local businesses. It's unclear if StarKist Samoa will be working Monday, as efforts to obtain information  from the corporate office on the mainland, were unsuccessful at press time.

In observance of the holiday, Samoa News will not publish Monday but will return on Tuesday. Samoa News website [www.samoanews.com] will provide any latest local anews.

CRUISE SHIPS ARRIVE SUNDAY AND MONDAY

American Samoa Visitor’s Bureau executive director David Vaeafe confirmed Friday that the next cruise ships for the territory this month will be Sunday and Monday, bringing a total of six cruise ship for February, which has the highest numbers of ship visits this year.

The Visitor’s Bureau had initially announced early this month that Holland American Line’s “Amsterdam” was scheduled to arrive Saturday, but Vaeafe said that this cruise ship is set for Sunday calling into the Port of Pago Pago around 7a.m. with up to 1,380 passengers and about 647 crew members.

The ship arrives from Pape'ete, French Polynesia and departs around 4pm for Lifou, New Caledonia. It’s on a 51 night cruise from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Sydney, Australia.

Then on Monday, the Seabourn Cruise Line's “Seabourn Odyssey” on her maiden voyage to the territory, calls into port around 8am from Lautoka, Fiji Islands and departs 1pm for  Fanning Island, Kiribati.

Labeled a luxury liner, accommodating up to 450 passengers and 335 crew members, this ship is on a 72 night cruise from Los Angeles through the Pacific to Ft. Lauderdale.

Local agent for both cruise ships is Polynesia Shipping. Samoa News understands that some downtown area stores and restaurants will be open Sunday and Monday for the two ships.
