Cohort 25 celebrates with Literacy Carnival

The 4th of July is a day of fun and celebration, with family, friends, summertime food and often fireworks, but in American Samoa, this 4th of July was also the time for community service of a different kind.

Sponsored and hosted by University of Hawaii’s upcoming teacher cohort (Cohort 25), a “Literacy Carnival” was held at Lions Park across from ANZ/Amerika Samoa bank on the national holiday.

The purpose of the carnival was to promote interest in reading by engaging children in fun literacy activities. There were stories read aloud, dancing, games and activities with a reading theme. Prizes, including $2000 worth of books, were distributed to children who attended. In spite of the overcast, rainy weather, hundreds of children attended.
