Summer programs for youth offer full plate of activities

With the summer just beginning, a full plate of sports is being sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with some of the local sports organizations, focusing on youth participation, while other local sports organizations are also offering Summer programs aimed at bringing youth to the field or water for health and experience.

 

The full plate includes Tennis, Basketball, Little League Baseball, Volleyball, Passing Flag Football, Water sessions, Wrestling, and Track & Field.

 

Tennis: The American Samoa Tennis Association (ASTA) meets at the tennis courts next to the Lions park and also at the tennis courts in Pago Pago throughout the week and the weekends.

 

Basketball: It’s being conducted by the American Samoa Basketball Association for  young boys and girls ages 8-16 to learn the fundamentals of the game from the highly qualified instructors of the association that meet daily and on the weekends at Tafuna High School, Leone High School and in Alofau.

 

Little League Baseball: The American Samoa Little League Baseball hosted by the American Samoa Baseball Association, was the first summer sports program to begin, and it meets during the week and the weekends, at the Tony Solaita baseball field where they field teams of boys and girls ages 6-14 in three different divisions.

 

Volleyball: The Measina Volleyball Club has a camp at this time for boys and girls ages 8-17. It began this past Saturday and is taking place at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) basketball gymnasium. The camp is scheduled to run up until July 13th.

 

Passing Flag Football: The Passing Flag Football League (PFFL), which is headed by former National Football League (NFL) player Niko Noga, is heading up the league once again that first began back in 2010. The PFFL this summer started last Saturday with the games being played in Aua.

 

Water sessions: For all of you who are looking to get into shape this summer, there are land and water workout sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Utulei Beach Park that are led by certified Safety Water Instructor Daniel Saifoloi. He will also be giving swimming lessons to anyone 6 years and older.

 

Wrestling: The Ca-Boom wrestling club is holding wrestling practice/lessons daily at the Veterans Memorial stadium.

 

Track & Field: The Ohana Running Club practices daily as well at the Veterans Memorial, where they train local athletes in the sports of Track and Field/Athletics.
