Power failure: Only one generator working at Samoa's Fiaga Station

A $91.2 million electricity project described by Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sa’ilele Malielegaoi as “one” in “every thirty years” failed to prevent a total blackout on Upolu and Manono-tai islands on Tuesday night. The power outage lasted for over an hour, leaving hundreds of homes and thousands of residents in the dark - many of them were still trying to cook dinner when the electricity went off.Students who had homework to complete went to bed before electricity was restored. Elsewhere, shops were forced to close, workers sent home and petrol stations unable to cater for frustrated motorists and residents hunting for kerosene to light up their home-made lamps. But Tuesday night’s black out wasn't the only one.Last week, there were several black outs and power surges during the day. This has angered residents and members of the business community who have vented their frustrations on the social media about the persistent problems with electricity supply in Samoa. Many of them say they have lost valuable assets as a result.Yesterday, the General Manager of the Electric Power Corporation (EPC), Tologata Tile Leia apologised yet again for the inconvenience caused. The apology was made in a press statement, which confirmed problems at the $91.2m Fiaga Power Station, opened last month by Prime Minister Tuilaepa.“The Electric Power Corporation apologizes to the public for unexpected power outages on the islands of Upolu and Manono tai, experienced last week and last night,” a statement issued by EPC yesterday afternoon said.“This was due to continuous testing of new generators at the new Fiaga Power Plant. These tests are scheduled to be completed on Friday 21 June 2013.”
