Having reported her brother and his wife to the Police for abusing a two-year-old baby, Tanya Fagaleo’o made a heartfelt plea for mercy before the District Court on Monday.“I reported them because I love my brother and I wanted him to love the child even if it’s not his real son,” she said.“I had advised him many times to care for the child like his own and I wanted them to spend time together and bond.”When he didn't listen, Tanya did the unthinkable. She called the Police and told them about the abuse.Tanya’s brother is Ameto Faasei, 39.On Monday, he and his wife, Lele Vaisola, 29, of Matautu and Falefa pleaded guilty to four charges of assault against the baby. The victim is Vaisola’s baby from a previous relationship. Before sentencing, Tanya begged the court for mercy. She said that ever since the couple was taken to custody, “they have been sorry and regret what they did.”Tanya told Judge Mata Tuatagaloa her only intention when she reported the matter was to protect the child. She also wanted to teach her brother a lesson so he could all his children unconditionally.“I visit the kids and buy them food,” said Tanya. “I have also been going to prison to see my brother and his wife and they are very sorry for what had happened.”Her Honour Judge Tuatagaloa said Ameto was very lucky.“Your are blessed to have a sister who cares because even though it's not her children, she cares about them,” she said. “You are lucky to have a sister that considers the protection of your children and what is best for them. Her Honour Tuatagaloa said the Court considers what is in the “best interest of the kids and who will protect them if they aren’t protected from you (parents).”According to police report, the couple assaulted the two-year-old boy because he cried too much. The report said that when Tanya tried to take the boy to the hospital on one occasion, her brother attempted to stop her by trying to pull the baby from a moving car.“Every child cries a lot because they are still babies and parents are supposed to be patient,” said Her Honour Tuatagaloa. “And you didn’t beat him lightly, you assaulted him and as a result he received serious injuries.”The Judge told the mother, Lele, to play her role.
