Sharks off to good start as girls HS varsity soccer champs

The Samoana Sharks varsity squad is off to a good start after a 6-0, season opening win over the Tafuna Warriors on Jan. 13 to kick start the 2013-2014 ASHSAA Girls soccer season.

Samoana is the division’ three-time defending champs and are bidding for a fourth straight title under the guidance of Silasila Samuelu.

“I don’t think it’s going to be an easy task for us to accomplish but we are going to try our best,” Samuelu said. “Good luck to all the teams out there and may the best one win.”

There are eight teams competing in the ASHSAA varsity league — Fa’asao Marist Cougars, Faga’itua Vikings, Kanana Fou Stallions, Leone Lions, Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats, Samoana, Tafuna and South Pacific Academy Dolphins.

The season is nine games long — one-round robin plus two additional matches randomly selected by the DOE Athletics Department — followed by a top four playoff to determine the champions.

Playoffs are scheduled for Feb. 24 with the championship game to be held Feb. 27.

For the lower division — Junior Varsity — it’s the usual suspects with only four teams competing — Faga’itua, Leone, defending champs Samoana and Tafuna.

Samoana’s J-V is also attempting a fourth title in a row when the season kicks off Jan. 23. The teams will compete in two-round robins and the school that completes the season with the best record will be tabbed as the champions.
