Sharks hand Warriors their first loss of the season in ASHSAA Varsity basketball

Things are starting to heat up going into the second half of this year's American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Boys Varsity Basketball division. The defending champion Tafuna Warriors last two games had them being pushed to the edge; and last Thursday, the Fa’asao Marist Crusaders came to Tafuna with an undefeated record and gave the Warriors the biggest challenge they faced all season up to that time. Fortunately for the Warriors, they were able to pull out the victory by one point.

However, on the very next day, the Warriors traveled to Samoana to face a much improved Sharks team since the first game of the season when the Warriors had defeated them by 23 points. However, in their second meeting, which occurred last Friday, it was the Sharks who upset the undefeated Warriors, leaving the Warriors with their first loss of the season.

Going into the second month of Varsity play in February, the top four teams at this time are the Crusaders, Warriors, Sharks and Leone Lions.

This past Tuesday, the Faga’itua Vikings won their second game of the season against the Lions. Even though it was a forfeit win for the Vikings, the Vikings now move into the fifth place spot in the standings, pushing the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats down to the sixth spot, with the South Pacific Academy Dolphins taking the last spot at number seven in the standings.

Today's games will have the Sharks meeting the Lions at Samoana, as the Crusaders will be playing the Vikings at the Malaeloa gymnasium. Tomorrow (Friday), the Sharks will be playing in a continuation game against the Wildcats at Samoana.

These two teams originally met on January 21, but just as the first half ended, there were technical difficulties with the time and score clock, which forced the game to a halt. At the time, the Sharks were up by a score of 34-25.

The other game tomorrow will have the Lions traveling to Tafuna to play the Warriors. All of these games have a scheduling starting time of 4:30 p.m.

This Saturday, there will be one Varsity game — the Dolphins play the Wildcats. That Varsity game will be played after the four scheduled JV Basketball games that begin at 8:00 a.m., and all will be played at Tafuna High School.

The first Boys JV game will have the Warriors versus the Vikings in a battle of the undefeated teams. The second game will be the Sharks and Wildcats, as game three will see the Lions going against the Crusaders. Game four will be the Sharks and Warriors.

ASHSAA continues to invite the public out to all of these games in support of our athletes. Schedule is subject to change without notice.
