Know what to do when you get in deep water

Another person has taken advantage of the Adult Water Safety classes and swimming lessons conducted by the American Samoa Aquatics Agency (ASAA) head, Zero Iaulualo. The courses were taught over a two-week period.

Radhika Anandan of Tafuna decided it was time for her to get into the water — not only to learn how to swim, but for safety reasons as well. “I think the skills that I learned during the lessons are very valuable. Before I started this class, I was not comfortable going into the deep. If I did not touch the sand, I would panic,” said Anandan.

“With the skills that I learned in this class, I am more comfortable now. I know now that if I do happened to get into the deep water, I know what to do and to me that is very important,” she explained.

She said that she would be taking these skills that she learned with her to Boise, Idaho where she got called to serve a mission for the Latter Day Saints Church. “There is a promise that I made with Zero that with the skills that I received from this class, I will teach it to someone else,” she said.

But before going to Idaho, she will be going to Fiji with her family where she said that she will start to keep her promise by teaching others about water safety and swimming. One of the people she said she will start with is her sister.

“I would totally recommend anybody to come out and learn about water safety and swimming. We live on an island and we are surrounded by water. I think to give yourself an assurance to know what to do if you are in the water in a bad scenario, it would be beneficial to take these classes,” she said.
