The Fa’asao-Marist Cougars are unofficial champions of the 2016-2017 ASHSAA Girls Soccer Junior Varsity Division with two games remaining in the schedule.

Fa’asao-Marist has completed their season and are eight points clear of their closest competitor, the Leone Lions, with 19 points to 11. Up for grabs is second place between the Lions and Tafuna Warriors (10 points).

The remaining J-V games are Leone vs. Faga’itua, and Samoana vs. Tafuna.

In the varsity division, the top four teams are No. 1 Fa’asao-Marist, No. 2 South Pacific Academy, No. 3 Samoana and No. 4 Tafuna. Teams are scrambling for the final-four playoff berths before the end of the season this week.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Once the results are official, the Cougars will have won back-to-back titles for the J-V division.

They steam rolled through the 5-team competition in the first round robin with four wins out of four games, but then stuttered in the second half of the season with two wins, a loss and a tie for a 6-1-1 record.

However, their six wins are double that of Leone and Tafuna’s records of three wins each.

The result will be official at the conclusion of the varsity championship game scheduled for March 22, 2017.

VARSITY

The No. 1 spot has changed twice in the last two weeks, with Samoana relinquishing it first to the Dolphins after SPA beat the Sharks 3-0 on March 8. Three days later, defending champions Fa’asao-Marist leapt from the No. 3 spot to No. 1 with a 3-1 win over the Sharks.

In the final game of the season for SPA and Fa’asao-Marist, the game ended in a thrilling 2-2 tie, denying SPA a chance to take back the top spot in the standings from the Cougars.

A re-shuffling of the final four spots for the playoffs is still possible before the season ends this week, and no spot is safe. The Vikings, sitting at No. 5, do have a chance of earning a playoff berth if Tafuna falters.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Monday, March 20 with the winners advancing to the championship game on Wednesday, March 22.
