Sen. Gabbard honors American Samoa native as Hawaii Young Mother of the Year

(PRESS RELEASE) - Sen. Mike Gabbard presented a certificate on behalf of the Hawaii State Senate to Ms. Amanda Jeanine Fa'a'alailetaua Galea'i Schubert Wong on March 7 in honor of her being named 2008 Hawaii Young Mother of the Year.

The occasion was the American Mothers, Inc. (AMI) Annual Awards Dinner held at the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki.

"Jeanine is a constituent of mine who lives in Kapolei. It was special for me to be a part of this memorable day in her life," said Gabbard. "Her testimony is filled with personal examples of how God has blessed her family and how she has overcome many obstacles because of her faith in Him. I wish her a lifetime of happiness with Mike, her husband, and their three children, as she serves as a representative of Hawaii and a positive role model for mothers everywhere."

Wong was born in American Samoa and is the daughter of Alfonso Galea'i. She moved to Honolulu when she was just two weeks old. She is married to Michael Wong and they live in Kapolei, Hawaii.

Jeanine is a Certified Nurse Assistant and the mother of three children. She is a member of Makakilo Baptist Church, volunteers with Hawaii Meals on Wheels by delivering food to the elderly, and is a Girl Scout Leader for Troop 1082. She is fiercely devoted to her family and finds strength in quiet times with God.

Mrs. Wong was nominated and ultimately chosen as AMI's Hawaii Young Mother because of her loving dedication to her husband, children, church and community.

AMI is a national, interfaith, non-political, non-profit organization for women and men who want to strengthen the moral and spiritual foundations of the family and the home.

Senator Gabbard represents District 19, which includes Waikele, Village Park, Royal Kunia, Makakilo, Kapolei, Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, and portions of Waipahu and Ko 'Olina. Gabbard previously served as a Honolulu City Councilman (Ewa, Kapolei, Waianae Coast) from 2003 to 2005.

The senator, who is the son of Benjamin Harrison Gabbard and Agnes Yandall Gabbard of Leloaloa, lived in American Samoa from 1971-1983.
