Solar defeated
Utulei 15-5 Tuesday evening to advance to the Gatorade/Pepsi
American Samoa Softball Association (ASSA) Fast Pitch men's championship
match set for 1: 30 p.m. Saturday at the Tony Solaita Baseball
Field.
Playoffs opened
Monday between women's division leaders Kip McGrath, who beat
Dare 17-3 to seal their ticket to the women's championship game.
The game was called on a mercy ruling.
Kip McGrath now
heads to the women's championship match where they will face
Westside. The women's championship match is set for Saturday
at 12 p.m.
Westside secured
their place in the title match last evening after they defeated
R & J Mackenzie 13-3.
Solar (6-3) in
the men's division and Kip McGrath (7-2) in the women's division
closed the regular season on Saturday May 3, at the top of the
league.
"Congratulations
again to all of the participating teams, especially to Solar
of the men's division and Kip McGrath of the women's division
for coming in first place in their respective divisions,"
said ASSA President Larry Sanitoa. "I said it a while back
that this is, by far, the most competitive league ever, insofar
as fast pitch is concerned and obviously the final standing has
reflected that."
Final regular
season standings are as follows: Solar (6-3); P. Pacific (5-3-1);
Coastline (4-4-1) and Utulei (2-6-1) in the men's division. In
the women's division: Kip McGrath (7-2); Westside (5-4); R &
J Mackenzie (4-5) and Dare (1-8).
Before the women
of R & J Mackenzie met Westside last evening, Sanitoa said
"it still could be anybody's championship" with the
second and third ranked teams meeting last evening and today.
The winner of
this evening's Coastline/P. Pacific match will face Solar in
Saturday's championship match and Sanitoa predicts a very competitive
match this evening between Coastline and P. Pacific.
Today's losing
team will meet Utulei in the men's consolation match Saturday
at 10:30 a.m. while R & J Mackenzie will meet Dare in the
women's consolation match set for 9 a.m. Saturday.
"We expect
to have a very competitive championship game," said Sanitoa.
A closing ceremony
will follow the men's championship match where David Robinson,
general manager of local Gatorade and Pepsi distributors Panamex
Pacific, Inc. will present teams with their awards.
Sanitoa wishes
all teams good luck.
