Weather Update: Heavy rainfall through Friday

The National Weather Service Pago Pago is predicting heavy rainfall, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds through Friday.

An active monsoonal trough, which now sits between Tutuila and Manu’a will trigger scattered to frequent showers, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds especially over coastal waters.

Expect winds at 35 and up to 55 miles an hour. The public is advised that winds this strong can make driving difficult and to take extreme caution and control of your vehicle while on the road. Expected wet weather and strong gusty winds will be a concern for loose items around the yard.

A bulk of heavy moisture and developing convection are found up to 200 miles north quadrants of Tutuila and Manu’a. Strong gusty winds associated with the monsoonal trough will push through the affected area and coastal waters through Friday.

Frequent showers and locally heavy rainfall can produce up to 3 to 5 inches of rainfall through this evening. Flash flooding is possible as wet weather conditions continue to linger across the region through Friday morning.

The public is encouraged to take precautionary actions especially when traveling on the main road. Report all severe weather incidents to the EOC at 699-3800 or contact the NWS at 699-9130.
