A.S. HONORS
ITS TEACHERS DURING NATIONAL TEACHER'S WEEK
Schools across
American Samoa are honoring its classroom teachers during National
Teacher Appreciation Week which ends Saturday with special programs
being hosted to honor the territory's educators.
The theme is:
To Lead is To Serve.
Teachers are
at the core of the public education system and essential to the
territory's democratic government, said Governor Togiola Tulafono
in his National Teacher Appreciation Week Proclamation.
He attributes
social, technological and scientific progress to teachers who
"are entrusted with the educational development of our children."
Togiola said,
"It is appropriate that teachers be recognized for their
dedication and commitment to educating our children...teachers
continue to influence us long after our school days are only
memories."
During the week,
school administrators will honor the hard-working teachers of
American Samoa with special breakfasts and lunches and assemblies
and programs where teacher awards will be distributed.
Students and
their parents honor and thank teachers with gifts and 'ula throughout
the week.
From May 4-10,
Togiola urges all residents of American Samoa "to join in
the vital task of paying tribute to our schoolteachers and acknowledging
the impact of teachers on our lives."
DAVID FEDLAM
ASSIGNED TO A.S. UNDER DOI ISLAND FELLOWS
Interior Department's
Office of Insular Affairs, has assigned David Fedlam, to American
Samoa under the agency's 2008 Island Fellows Program.
According to
OIA, Fedlam, an MBA candidate at the Robert Emmett McDonough
School of Business at Georgetown University, holds a BA from
Amherst College and has completed course work leading to an MA
at Dartmouth College.
Fedlam and other
fellows assigned to U.S. Pacific insular territories and freely
associated states will begin their 10-week program in Washington
D.C. on June 11. They will start visiting the insular areas around
the week of June 16.
While visiting
their respective assigned jurisdictions, they will meet with
local businesses and government leaders to identify local priorities
for the types of businesses that residents believe should be
invited to the fifth Secretary of the Interior's Conference on
Business Opportunities in the Islands, to be held in Honolulu
in April 2009.
Once the Island
Fellows return from the islands, they will begin to market the
next Conference actively, and OIA staff will welcome recommendations
from the various business owners within the insular jurisdictions
for making the next Conference the best one yet.
This year's Island
Fellows will be introducing a new business development tool known
as "Island Business Link", a system to facilitate the
matching of island businesses with businesses anywhere in the
world and is based on the model OIA used for the "business-to-business
(B2B) meetings" that were held at the last two Conferences
on Business Opportunities in the Islands.
The Island Fellows
will be conducting at least one workshop for government and business
leaders on how the system works.
