WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata held a town hall meeting in Aunu’u last week Wednesday to listen to all concerns raised, and talk about any issues that are important to the community.

 “Among the first priorities brought up is the need for a seawall,” said the Congresswoman. “The island is a beautiful place, but the ocean really batters the shoreline, and our people in Aunu’u are very concerned about their road, the rising waves, and the erosion.”

Congresswoman Uifa’atali highlighted legislation that might be of interest, such as the recent Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which could provide for infrastructure efforts such as a sea wall.

Aunu’u also has ongoing needs regarding water supply and their drinking water, as they said they usually buy bottled water on Tutuila and have to haul it back by hand.

Other concerns are the need for health clinic services that are unavailable, as during an illness [that] could mean the somewhat rough boat ride to Tutuila while sick. In a related concern, residents desire emergency transportation, ranging from a bridge to the possibility of a helicopter.

 “I appreciate everyone who came out, along with those willing to speak, as these meetings are very important to me,” Uifa’atali said. “I enjoy these meetings, but they are also helpful in the specifics, so I know what the needs are and can express those priorities in Washington.”
