ASG depts. & agencies collaborate to clean up Fagaloa area

The Dept. of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR) conducted a major clean up of the Fagaloa area following the heavy rainfall this past week.

Targeted areas included the ramp in Pago Pago, behind the Territorial Administration on Aging compound, and the marina in Fagatogo.

DMWR Director Dr. Ruth Matagi Tofiga said the heavy rains resulted in a lot of Styrofoam cups and wood debris from the inland streams washing on to the shore and into the ocean.

“This is just not safe for the mariners who utilize the harbor and marina area,” she said, adding that it is everyone’s responsibility to keep the territory litter-free and do what they can to promote cleanliness.

Matagi-Tofiga is thankful to the AS Environmental Protection Agency Director Ameko Pato and Deputy Director Fa’amoa Asalele and their staff, Dept. of Education Deputy Director Philo Jennings and his staff, the Territorial Energy Office and Keith Gebauer and the staff of the Criminal Justice Planning Agency who all came out to help with clean-up efforts this week.
