ASHSAA 2013-14 sports roundup

The 2013-2014 American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) sports season came to a sudden end this year after the outbreak of Pink Eye during the spring, and a rock throwing incident that put a delay at the start of fall sports.

To start off the season, the Tafuna Warriors dominated the Varsity Football scene as they went undefeated in the regular season and took the championship title in a season where they averaged 50 points a game, holding their opponents to an average of 14 points per game. In the Junior Varsity Division, the Leone Lions put an end to the Warrior dominance in the division, by taking the title this year.

In this year’s Girls Softball action, the defending champion Fa’asao Marist Cougars, who started the season off at a slow pace and sat in the middle of the pack during the entire regular season, got by their arch-rival and higher seeded Warriors in the playoffs to take on the high powered and top seeded Samoana Sharks. In the end, it was the Cougars who prevailed.

In the Boys Varsity Volleyball division, the Faga’itua Vikings made it back to the finals where they defended their championship title against the Warriors at Tafuna, who they defeated last season in the finals. This year, the Vikings did it once again.

In the boys Junior Varsity Volleyball division, the Sharks met up with Warriors in the finals, where the Warriors held out for the victory.

The girls Varsity Volleyball season was dominated by the Vikings and the Warriors this school year. These two teams met only twice in the regular season, with each team winning one and losing one. They met one more time in the finals, and in the end, it was the defending champion Warriors who walked away victorious, keeping the trophy at Tafuna. The Vikings, who were the defending Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball champions, lost only one game that was a forfeit loss, and finished out the season with the best record, keeping their championship title for another year.

The spring season started out with boys’ basketball. In the Boys Varsity Basketball division, the Sharks who started the season off filled with a high number of mistakes, made adjustments and rolled on to victory taking the championship title this year. The Boys Junior Varsity Basketball division had the team from the East Side, the Vikings, dominating the whole season as they cruised to a championship trophy this year.

The Girls Varsity Basketball division season ended early due to the Pink Eye outbreak. There was no clear-cut winner as the season ended early. However, the Warriors had the only undefeated record, with the Sharks right behind with only one loss, and that was to the Warriors.

In the Girls Junior Varsity Division, the Cougars had the best record, as they were the only undefeated team in the division, with the championship trophy going to them.

In Girls Soccer, the Sharks took the Varsity division, and the Vikings earned the championship in the Junior Varsity division.

The Boys and Girls Track and Field season had the Vikings winning the Boys division, while the Warriors won the Girls division.

In baseball action, each team only played a few games before the cancellation due to pink eye, which did not allow any team to clearly display their skills.
