Biz Beat: Continental Transport offers quality services for heavy equipment

Need hydraulic hoses and fittings? Look no further than Continental Transport Corporation (CTC), where you’ll experience outstanding performance and quality services, all at affordable rates.

The story behind the company’s journey from a ‘mom and pop’ retail store to what it is today is truly one of persistence and perseverance.

It all started in 1968 with the late Nu’utele Tiamo Togia’i, his small store, and his four-wheeled bus. In 1970, Nu’utele’s son Fa’asefulu and Elisapeta Togia’i took over the operations of the small grocery store and the same bus. (Fa’asefulu later became a senator in the local Legislature).

Over the next few years, the couple expanded and developed the land with a variety of livestock (mainly cows and pigs) and started growing produce and farming goods that were sold at the marketplace and in the store.

The businesses took off from there. The store was later named EastLand Market for its location in the most eastern village of Tula.

The bus fleet increased to 35 and at that time, it dominated transportation services on the eastern side of Tutuila Island and became known as Continental Transport Corporation (CTC).

The buses were sold in the mid-1990s as the family delved into the world of heavy equipment construction with one dump truck, an excavator, and a backhoe.

The family would figure out early that relentlessness was the key to being successful and after years of hard work, the ‘dream’ became a reality as the company has grown to become one of the territory’s leading heavy equipment construction businesses.

CTC has attained a level of establishment that has enabled them to compete with other local construction companies for federally funded projects for the American Samoa Government.

With over 50 employees currently on staff and 45 years of dedicated service under their belt, the third generation of CTC owners have kept the momentum going, with no signs of slowing down.

The company has two locations: Fogagogo and Tula.

“Our management staff, engineering and design specialists, and production divisions are all dedicated to continuous enhancement and in finding ways to improve projects, products, and services quality,” says the company website.

“CTC has gained extensive earthmoving, underground trenching and laying of waterlines for infrastructure development projects.  We have also successfully completed shoreline protection projects using armor rocks and fabricating our own TriBar concrete blocks, road constructions and water tank installation.”

Right now, CTC is the sole authorized distributor of New Zealand based Hydraulink “Best Under Pressure” hydraulic hoses and fittings for local heavy equipment machinery and fishing boats.  Their most repetitive customers represent the private sector, as well as government agencies and departments.

The company says their greatest achievement by far is the newly-installed, tested and approved, now fully operational Tula Rock Crushing Quarry, which has met all the requirements of the local government’s permit process.

This quarry places CTC among the shortlist of local construction aggregate suppliers, able to provide building materials for government projects, residential homes, and commercial building properties.

This year, the company completed the Nuuuli Shoreline Protection and Drainage Mitigation Project, which included the construction and installation of a cost-effective and maintenance-free seawall system extending along a disaster-prone area in Nuuuli.

In addition, CTC was also responsible for the American Samoa Power Authority’s FMF Water Supply System Project which was dedicated last month and included the installation of more than 20,000 feet of pipeline and the construction of a utility water tank with main water lines servicing the westernmost villages of Fagali’i, Malota, and Fagamalo.

In 2012, CTC completed a project that included an access way for passage to and from the ASPA Utility Water Tank in Pago Pago.

CTC offers a variety of services within the multi-construction specialty including heavy equipment rental, hauling, hydraulic hoses and fittings, earthmoving excavations, civil engineering, road work construction, concrete batching, seawall construction, underground pipelines, water tank construction and installation, and a rock crushing quarry.

CTC makes available ”a distinctive selection of aggregate cinder and top soil products used in many different construction projects, from commercial applications including but not limited to roads, highways, buildings and shoreline.” Their technicians are dedicated to ensuring that their construction aggregates adhere to the highest quality and performance standards.

“Above all, to ensure smooth and steady growth of its operations, CTC makes safety a priority and encourages employees’ awareness to maintain its full compliance with all OSHA requirements.”
