SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS FOR FISHERY CAPACITY- BUILDING

The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council and its Education Committee members are pleased to announce the availability of up to three graduate scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year. These scholarships support the aspiration of American Samoa, Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to build their capacity to effectively manage their fisheries and related resources by employing people from the local communities.

Students with strong ties to these territories are eligible for scholarships that cover the cost of tuition and fees and some living expenses. The amount will be based on the University’s estimated cost of attendance. Deadline to apply is July 17, 2023.

Funding for the scholarships comes in part from the Western Pacific Sustainable Fisheries Fund, NOAA Fisheries Pacific Islands Regional Office and Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center. For further details, please contact Amy Vandehey at info@wpcouncil.org or phone (808) 522-8220.

NEW DEADLINE FOR ENERGY GRANT APPLICATIONS

In light of the recovery efforts following Typhoon Mawar, Department of the Interior Assistant Secretary for Insular and International Affairs Carmen G. Cantor today announced that the Office of Insular Affairs has extended the open season for grant proposal submissions under the Energizing Insular Communities (EIC) grant program for fiscal year (FY) 2023 to July 17.

Those eligible to apply, as previously announced, are local government entities, independent authorities, and educational institutions located in the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each proposal will be reviewed and evaluated for two important criteria:

•           whether the proposal is directly tied to the territory’s respective strategic energy plan, energy action plan, or integrated resource plan; and,

•           whether there is a projected energy cost savings to end-users.

All applications should be submitted through either GrantSolutions.gov or Grants.gov — where the EIC grant is listed under the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) number 15.875. For additional information visit https://www.doi.gov/oia/financial-assistance.
