AUGUST IS NATIONAL CHILDREN’S VISION AND LEARNING MONTH

MyVision Eye Center and Optical, located in Pago Pago, is teaming up with the Dept. of Health this month in recognition of National Children’s Vision and Learning Month.

From August 1 - 30, 2014 every Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 2p.m. and from 9 a.m. - 12noon on Saturdays at the MHJ Building in Pago Pago, MyVision Eye Care and Optical staff will be conducting free vision screenings for students of all ages: from pre-school to high school.

In a letter from MyVision owner and president Ta’isi Steffany and co-owner/optometrist Dr. Laloasi Petaia Steffany, the couple wrote, “Our company, MyVision Eye Care and Optical is completely supportive of the ‘No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB Act)’ established by President George W. Bush in 2001.”

Over a telephone interview with the Samoa News yesterday, Ta’isi said parents are highly encouraged to accompany their children to the vision screenings, so they can be informed about whether or not their kids need further eye examinations and/or eyeglasses.

Since the free screenings started last Friday, Ta’isi said they have been able to serve nearly a dozen kids as of yesterday morning, but they expect more to show up, once the news gets out through the media and word of mouth.

MyVision operates under the motto: “Improved sight, improved life” and they can be reached at 633-6332.

MASEFAU CRICKET TEAM TO DEPART FOR SEATTLE THIS FRIDAY

The Mosiula, this year’s Flag Day men’s cricket team champions, will be heading to Seattle, Washington this coming Friday to take part in the International Cricket Tournament set to be held next week in the Evergreen State where a high population of Samoans reside.

Masefau’s Mosiula includes a 35-member roster and supporters who carried out a successful raffle and other fundraising activities last month to help finance their trip. The delegation will include members of the clergy, government officials, and village chiefs.

The group is set to return to the territory on August 22.

In addition to the Mosiula, the 2014 Flag Day women’s division cricket champions from Vailoatai were also invited to play in Seattle but they will not be attending due to the start of the new school year and other obligations. These were the same reasons given when the team declined an invitation to play earlier this year during the Samoan Flag Day celebrations in Los Angeles, CA.
