Free workshop tomorrow for aspiring young scientists

The National Park of American Samoa, in collaboration with the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa (NMSAS), and the Dept. of Youth and Women’s Affairs (DYWA) will be hosting a free workshop tomorrow from 8 a.m. — 10:30 a.m. at the Tauese P.F. Sunia Ocean Center.

Samuel Meleisea, a park ranger with the National Park said yesterday that the workshop is something that was spearheaded by Charity Porotesano, the NMSAS 2014 Volunteer of the Year and other college graduates who wanted to share their interests in the field of science with other locals, specifically high school students.

The workshop, believed to be the first of its kind in the territory, targets young people — both high school and college students — and the goal is to drive more local youngsters towards pursuing degrees in different areas within the field of science.

Speaking at the workshop will be Samuel Meleisea of the National Park Service, Casuallen Fale (an employee of the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency), and Charles Miller, a student at the University of Hawai’i- Hilo who is majoring in marine science and is currently a volunteer at the NMSAS.

Meleisea explained that besides the panel of guest speakers, other college graduates with science degrees who are currently employed by the American Samoa Government will also be present to provide free information and share their knowledge with those in attendance.
