Fundraising for Fiji supported by local businesses

Efforts by local business owners, Solip and Carol Hong, Tuai and Case Mua, and Rachael and Tulaga Whitcombe has led the Fijian Community and the locals to send three containers to Fiji following the damaging Tropical Cyclone Winston last month. Those affected in Fiji are still trying to come to terms with the damage that Winston left — with 42 people dead.

Pacific Media reports say that Winston is the most powerful storm on record in the Southern Hemisphere. Mrs. Mua told Samoa News, the move to help those affected by Winston and to send containers full of goods, canned food, water, and clothes was initiated by Carol and Solip Hong.

Mrs. Mua told Samoa News that Mrs. Hong shared her thoughts as she was scrolling through her newsfeed on Facebook when her heart sunk and felt the Lord's prompt to help. Mrs. Hong said she spoke to her husband Solip about helping as one of the most important aspects of the Bible is helping people who are in need. “Our family has been blessed abundantly and have been blessed with the word of God that keeps on pressing about God's love and our purpose in this life to serve him through helping the poor and oppressed. There couldn't be a better time.”

She further stated that this would not have been possible without the assistance by the Fijian community living on island.

According to Mrs Mua, Starkist Samoa graciously helped with their drive donating thousands of dollars worth of tuna and also sending the first container to Fiji. “The public has been tremendous with donations, such as the Beaver Estate that donated $3,000 alongside with so many individual families who have given $100 at our first drive three weeks ago. GHC Reid has donated boxes Vaimalu water, Peter Reid & Company donated 100 boxes that made packing easier for our containers, Great Life Church donated $555 cash, Leiuila & Joe Ioane alongside with Victor of AYFS donated the boxes for the drop off areas,’ she said. According to Mrs Mua the second container was sent by KS Mart, which contained $5,000 worth of goods such as coolers, flash lights, towels, trash bins etc, donated by Neil’s Ace Home Center last Saturday.

The are many drop off location for donations, look for the signs and to name a few spots, Cost-U-Less, KS Mart, Forsgrens and SSAB.
