Honolulu, HAWAII — Brigham Young University–Hawaii Operations Vice President Kevin Schlag has named Arlene Sewell as the new Chief Information Officer. In this role, Sewell will lead all aspects of Information Technology, providing strategic direction to help the university accomplish its mission.

“Arlene is a wonderful fit for the university. As an alumna, she shows our students their future, and she has walked in their shoes,” Schlag said. “Her experience and talents will help the technology work of the university leap forward to meet our strategic needs. We are all looking forward to working with her.”

Sewell will begin on September 1.

Most recently, Sewell served as Project Manager in the OIT department at BYU in Provo, Utah. Prior to that position, she worked as Director of IT Projects & Technology Services at Dixie State University. She has over 20 years of IT management experience including positions at American Samoa Community College, Blue Sky Communications, and Children's Hospital-San Diego.

“I am excited to return to BYUH to serve the community that served me and empowered me to be on a path of service and leadership,” Sewell said. “Things have come full circle and I am excited to pay it forward.”

Originally from the village of Utulei in American Samoa, her parents are Elama Pele and Loretta Tupua. Sewell earned a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems from BYU–Hawaii and a Master of Science in Information Systems Security from Colorado Technical University. She is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining in 1996. She and her husband, Gabriel Sewell, are the parents of five adult children.
