Am Samoa’s delegation to SPC seeks stronger ties to the region
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Lt. Governor Talauega E.V. Ale and a local delegation are in Suva, Fiji for strategic meetings with the Pacific Community (SPC) to forge stronger ties with the regional organization and to advocate for American Samoa’s inclusion in these important Pacific conversations.
The first day opened on Tuesday, Feb. 13, with the Pacific Community (SPC) Suva Missions Briefing led by Director General Dr. Stuart Minchin. During this meeting Lt. Governor Talauega spoke of American Samoa's commitment to escalating regional engagement and contribution and escalating the Territory’s active participation in discussions of significant regional events. During the session, the delegation was given the opportunity to interact with SPC teams and members, gaining valuable insights into regional priorities and networking with their counterparts.
Following the briefing, the delegation was received by Dr. Mareva Lechat, Head of Delegation for International, European & Pacific Affairs, Office of the President, French Polynesia, at the Grand Pacific Hotel. Discussions centered around French Polynesia's remarkable journey to full membership, with the delegation seeking guidance and support, recognizing the invaluable role of experience-sharing in navigating the complexities of regional politics.
Later in the day, the delegation met with the Samoa High Commissioner to Fiji, Ali’ioaiga Feturi Elisaia where discussions centered around a shared heritage and mutual aspirations for both Samoas.
Through dialogue, collaboration, and shared aspirations, American Samoa sought to chart a course towards a future of prosperity, unity, and shared destiny within the Blue Pacific family.
The day ended with the Am Samoa delegation attending a dinner hosted by Ali’ioaiga. Also present were Reverend Dr. Upolu Luma Vaai, Principal of the Pacific Theological College; Reverend Vavatau Taufao, Missionary for The Congregational Christian Church of Samoa in Fiji; and fellow Samoans living in Suva.
BACKGROUND
Prior to departure for Fiji, the American Samoa delegation prepared to meet with several representatives of the Pacific Island Forum (PIF) Secretariat, to continue the discussion of American Samoa becoming an Associate Member. American Samoa has held Observer status at PIF since 2011, and since taking office in 2020, Gov. Lemanu P.S. Mauga has publicly announced the territory’s desire to be an official Associate Member.
“Becoming an Associate Member of the Pacific Island Forum represents a milestone in our ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with our Pacific brothers and sisters. We believe that close collaboration within the region will not only bring mutual benefits but also promote sustainable development and resilience in our communities,” the governor said.
The Lemanu-Talauega administration’s interest in joining the forum as an Associate Member reflects its recognition of the importance of regional cooperation in addressing pressing issues such as food security, fisheries, climate change, international trade, strategic communication, and digital technology. By actively participating in the forum’s activities and dialogue, the territory aims to contribute to the advancement of shared goals and priorities across the Pacific region.
