Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Aumua Amata is honoring the 245th anniversary of the Army, in advance of June 14th, which marks the founding of the Army in 1775. June 14 also commemorates the nation’s adoption of the U.S. flag in 1777. She released the following statement:

“This year, on 14 June, the United States Army celebrates 245 years of continuous patriotic service to our great country. Not long after the troops first took the field around Boston, George Washington was given the historic responsibility of being the first commanding General.

“Here in American Samoa, our people have built a tremendous record of service, and the Army looks here yearly for excellent recruits. We take pride in our soldiers.

“Congratulations to each one of our own serving in the Army or Army Veterans, because this day is about you, and those who went before you.

“Our islands’ fine tradition has grown greatly since my father served in the Army in World War II. That’s how I know how a day like this reminds so many of our military families of dear loved ones, often far away.

“May God bless those serving, our Veterans, and the families who send young men and women into uniform.

“The date coincides with the day in 1777 when the nation officially selected the U.S. flag. To the U.S. Army and to Old Glory, we say Happy Birthday!”
