Second Gentleman of the US Douglas Emhoff with Congresswoman Uifa’atali Aumua Amata on Tuesday evening at the Australian Embassy in Washington D.C. following the second day of the two-day Pacific Islands Forum (PIC) Washington Summit.

The Pacific leaders gathered Monday for the start of the two-day Washington summit. Many have been critical of rich countries for not doing enough to control climate change despite being responsible for much of the problem, and for profiting from loans provided to vulnerable nations to mitigate the effects.

The Second Gentleman, as husband to Vice President Kamala Harris, became the highest-profile U.S. official to visit Samoa over the summer and has had a leading role in the administration’s outreach to Pacific island nations.
