American Samoa to welcome "Chasing Yesterday" Team with island hospitality

UTULEI, AMERICAN SAMOA — This morning, American Samoa is poised to welcome five extraordinary endurance runners from the internationally recognized “Chasing Yesterday” team as they arrive to pursue an ambitious endurance challenge while inspiring people around the world through perseverance, determination, and community.

The Chasing Yesterday team is attempting a world-first marathon challenge across the International Date Line to raise funds and awareness for Nacoa (National Association for Children of Alcoholics). The team is reportedly completing a marathon in Samoa, then traveling "back in time" to American Samoa — to run a second marathon on the technically previous day.

Rather than taking time to rest after their flight, the team will head directly from Pago Pago International Airport to Veterans Memorial Stadium in Utulei, where they will begin running laps around the track in pursuit of their goal.

For SPW Fitness and the local organizing team, however, it is about much more than setting a record. It is about showing visitors what makes American Samoa special.

"We want these athletes to leave with more than a finish time," said SPW Fitness owner Michael McDonald. "We want them to remember the people they met, the encouragement they received, and the genuine hospitality that defines our islands."

Community members of all ages and fitness levels are invited to join the runners throughout the day. Whether someone chooses to run one lap, one mile, or simply stop by to cheer, every show of support will help create an unforgettable experience for the visiting athletes.

The event is open to everyone.

"We're not asking people to run 42 kilometers," McDonald said. "We're simply asking people to come out and be part of something positive. Walk a lap. Run a lap. Cheer from the sidelines. Encourage these runners and show them the spirit of American Samoa."

The visit also provides an opportunity to promote healthy lifestyles and community involvement, demonstrating that fitness is about encouraging one another regardless of age or ability.

American Samoa has built a reputation for welcoming visitors with warmth, generosity, and family values. Organizers hope tomorrow's event reflects those same qualities.

"We often talk about Samoan hospitality," McDonald added. "Tomorrow we have the opportunity to put that hospitality on full display."
