ASCADSV proving night classes for working moms — sewing & carving

Katie Leilua and Tasi Miller cheer on Ala Poasa

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA —  Katie Leilua and Tasi Miller cheer on Ala Poasa as she tries for the first time to put the pedal to the needle and create some stitches on her material. The three are part of more than a dozen full time working moms who are learning how to sew at night for the next five weeks.

The night sewing class started last week for full time working women who are unable to make the daytime classes being offered by the American Samoa Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (ASCADSV).

The program provides all the women with a bag of material that they will use to sew any outfit they would like to make by the end of the course. In addition to sewing, ASCADSV is also offering wood carving this year.

The  program received a generous donation and support from Rep. Andra Samoa, who has hosted her own sewing programs for women in her village of Leone and the faipule is currently taking part in the wood carving class.

The working women are pictured with ASCADSV executive director Mrs. Liliu Tapuai-Mailo (seated, center) and sewing instructor William Coronel (seated, far left).
