Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — At a time when the world is evolving and developing skills that are essential to thriving in advanced technology, the Teacher Education Department (TED) at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) has set an objective this year is to move forward with implementing STEAM Education in its courses.
On Wednesday, the November 15, 2023, the ASCC Teacher Education Department launched its first STEAM night. STEAM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics — including Language Arts, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts.
Students enrolled in courses offered by TED for both the Associates and Bachelor's Program carefully planned and set up booths for children of all ages at the ASCC Multipurpose Center.
It was a fun filled night with educational activities that were enjoyed by children and their parents.
All who participated in the event enjoyed games and activities coordinated by the students, who had created the booths, that were set up inside and outside of the MPC.
These booths offered a variety of activities from creating puppets, building models, engineering designs, experimenting with Science projects, to making Samoan food and viewing displayed artifacts. There was also an obstacle course that emphasized the importance of fitness and health education.
The STEAM night was introduced last year by the TED Science Instructor, Brandy Shimisaki-Barber.
This year, TED has decided to include STEAM in all of its Education Courses, hence its first STEAM Night Event as a department.
