Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In recent days, Fagatogo has witnessed two significant fires, prompting renewed calls for the urgent reopening of the Fagatogo Fire Station. 

In a letter to the governor, dated July 6, 2026, Fagatogo lawmaker Malaeoletalu Melesio Gurr articulated the pressing need for immediate action. 

His correspondence was not only directed to the governor but also copied to key officials, including Lt. Governor Pulumata’ala Ae Ae Jr., Senate President Tuaolo Manaia Fruean, Speaker of the House Savali Talavou Ale, Chairman of the House Public Safety Committee Avagafono Vaimaga Maiava, Chief of Staff Leonard Seumanutafa, and the Director of the Department of Search and Rescue, which oversees the Fire Rescue Division. 

In his letter, Faipule Malaeoletalu conveyed the urgent concerns of the residents of Fagatogo regarding the continued closure of their fire station, which has been inactive for over 40 days following an order from the Department of Health. He noted the lack of a definitive timeline for when the station would reopen, is creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and vulnerability within the community. 

The dire consequences of this closure became painfully clear on a recent Friday evening when a fire ravaged the home of a family of ten, highlighting the critical risks posed by the absence of local fire services. 

Due to the station's closure, firefighters had to respond from Tafuna, resulting in a delayed response. While the firefighters performed admirably under the circumstances, the situation fundamentally underscores the unacceptable risks the community faces without an operational fire station.

Fagatogo is a densely populated area, home to more than 2,000 residents, numerous local businesses, and key infrastructures such as the Port of Pago Pago, as well as the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches of government. 

Malaeoletalu cited that it is essential that this vibrant community not be deprived of vital emergency services for such an extended period.

Additionally, with the Fagaitua Sub-Station currently undergoing repairs, he noted that the entire Eastern District is left even more susceptible to delays in emergency responses, which could have catastrophic consequences.

The Fagatogo faipule emphasized that public safety should never be compromised due to unresolved facility issues. He argued that if health concerns or necessary repairs dictated the station's temporary closure, every feasible effort should have been made to resolve those issues swiftly, so the community would not be left vulnerable for over a month. 

He urged the governor to direct the appropriate agencies to prioritize reopening the Fagatogo Fire Station or, alternatively, to establish a temporary operational arrangement within the Ma'oputasi District until full services are restored.

He firmly stated that the residents of Fagatogo should not have to suffer another devastating loss before this urgent matter receives the necessary attention and resolution it demands.

Last week, a family of ten in Fagatogo experienced an unimaginable loss after their home was completely engulfed in flames, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This family spans a wide age range: a 1-year-old baby girl, energetic boys aged 2, 4, and 5, and parents aged 22 and 30. 

Additionally, there are two male relatives aged 18 and 49, a 29-year-old female, and their beloved 71-year-old grandmother. Currently, the family is taking refuge at the Fagatogo Catholic Church Hall and is in urgent need of community support. They have lost everything and are facing a difficult time ahead. 

As first reported by Samoa News, the second fire occurred yesterday afternoon. A fire broke out in a facility directly behind the main Police Headquarters in Fagatogo, where holding cells for inmates awaiting court or transfer are located.

It occurred around 2 p.m., mere meters from the Fire Station, which has been closed for over a month due to unsanitary conditions and safety hazards after inspections by the DOH- Environmental Health Services Division. Its manager, Aileen Solaita, revealed that inspections had revealed unsanitary bathrooms and dangerous electrical wiring, posing an immediate risk of a fire within the station.

Eyewitnesses noted black smoke billowing from the structure before the fire was reported. However, due to the relocation of fire personnel and trucks to Tafuna, Fire Division members did not arrive on the scene until about 35 minutes later.

Luckily, a senior officer in the vicinity coordinated with another officer en route from Atu’u and activated an older fire engine at the abandoned Fagatogo headquarters to combat the blaze. Their efforts were bolstered by police officers on site.

Reports indicate significant destruction, particularly when flames reached the building's electrical wiring. 

The fire incidents have led to a decision to evacuate the Governor’s Office, which is in the nearby old ANZ bank building — located next to the closed fire station.

Consequently, all operations at the Governor's Office were suspended on Monday, until further notice to prioritize the safety of employees and the public.
