Close Up Foundation members attend 12th Annual Summit in American Samoa

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The 12th Annual Close Up Summit opened with a blend of tradition, inspiration, and civic pride as Governor Pulaali"i Nikolao Pula joined a panel of guests and student delegates from high schools across the territory.

Held at the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium, the summit was hosted in partnership with the American Samoa Department of Education, bringing together students, educators and leaders to explore foundations of leadership, public service, and hold discussions on government issues and collaborate on solutions.

The program began with a message from student delegate Tavita Savaii, whose words set the tone for a week dedicated to leadership, learning, and community. Dr. Dottie Tuisamatatele, DOE Assistant Director of the Secondary Division, led the opening ushering in a program designed to ignite civic engagement among American Samoa's youth.

Governor Pulaalii delivered special remarks speaking on the principles of government, and leadership. But it wasn't all lectures, he invited students to join him in a Q&A session, sparking dialogue and laughter throughout the auditorium. "Our Samoan cultural values of respect, service, and humility are the foundation of great leadership," the Governor said.

Following the Governor's remarks, Tuifa'asisina Athena Mauga, Deputy Director of the Department of Education, spoke on behalf of the Director, reinforcing the department's commitment to empowering students through civic education, which is needed now more than ever. 

Representatives from the Close Up Foundation in Washington, D.C. also made brief remarks, highlighting the national significance of the summit and applauding the territory's dedication to youth leadership.

The Close Up Foundation Summit continues to be a beacon for civic learning in American Samoa, offering students hands-on experiences in government, policy, and public service. With voices like these leading the way, the future of the territory looks brighter than ever.
