Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA —  Congresswoman Aumua Amata is welcoming $4 million in federal funds to American Samoa for four essential operations: American Samoa Government, LBJ Tropical Medical Center, American Samoa Community College and the High Court of American Samoa.

“The Interior Department is releasing a combined $4 million in grants that will help fund essential operations in American Samoa, and I’m particularly pleased that health care and education funds are included in this announcement,” said Aumua Amata. “This is good news for our Territory, and ensures these programs continue to have this important federal support.”

Specifically, the grants, as notified in a letter signed by Assistant Secretary Doug Domenech, are directed through the Office of Insular Affairs under the current continuing resolution passed by Congress.

The four grant amounts (estimated) are as follows: American Samoa Government operations, $2,166,840; LBJ Tropical Medical Center operations, $1,499,480; American Samoa Community College operations, $257,760; and High Court operations, $75,920.

“Congratulations to all those doing fine work at ASG, LBJ hospital, our Community College and High Court because grants like these recognize your daily efforts,” continued Congresswoman Amata. “Thank you to Secretary Ryan Zinke, Assistant Secretary Domenech and OIA’s Director Nikolao Pula for this federal support for these operations that we all depend on.”

2017-18 garners over $100 million in fed funding for American Samoa

Congresswoman Aumua Amata reported a listing comprised of most of the major federal grants welcomed throughout the past two years to American Samoa.

“In 2017 and 2018, we have welcomed over $100 million in federal grants received, processed and awarded in Washington, D.C. for American Samoa. While not entirely comprehensive, this list of grants broadly represents many (not all) of the grants made available to American Samoa over the course of the 115th Congress by President Trump and the Departments and Agencies under his Administration. Congress, in turn, sets and approves the funding budgets of these agencies out of which grants are determined, some by formula, some discretionary.

“These vital federal dollars are essential to maintaining and growing our jobs, economy and overall quality of all life in American Samoa. I am proud to work with such talented people from across the American Samoan Government who prepare these requests and submit them to Washington. Thank you also to the many dedicated public servants in DC, who evaluate and process these many various and important requests to our islands.

“I appreciate everyone involved with these grant programs in American Samoa and Washington, D.C., and I’m pleased to work with you on behalf of the people of American Samoa.”
