COVID UPDATE: Positive cases 433 as Am Samoa heads to weekend

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a virtual Zoom news conference today, Friday, Health officials announced that the territory’s cumulative COVID-19 positive count has reached 433 confirmed community cases, as of Mar. 10.

In the 24-hour period up to Mar. 10, DoH reported 51 new positive cases identified, 26 received therapeutic treatment, and 11 previous positive cases have recovered.

Since the community outbreak late last month, both DoH and LBJ Medical Center report today that there are no deaths relating to COVID-19.

LBJ also reports that as of Mar. 10,  three of the patients in the COVID Ward, were “discharged home” on Mar. 9; one old admission remains in the COVID Ward; and there was one new admission.

Of the overall total of 433 positives, villages with double-digit cases reported are Tafuna with 83, followed by Nuuuli 56, Leone 44, Pavaiai 30, Pago Pago 29,  Iliili 27, Fagasa 21, Vatia 19, Faleniu 18, Vaitogi 12, Fagaalu 12 and Malaeloa 10 and Fagaalu 10.

Data presented at the news conference reaffirmed that the virus remains on Tutuila island, with no reports from Aunu’u island and Manu’a island group.

It was also announced during the news conference that another federal team — about 15 of them — are scheduled to arrive on Saturday, Mar. 12 to provide support and response to the COVID spread.

Meanwhile, there will be two vaccination drive-thrus on Saturday, Mar. 12 — the already planned site at the Tafuna airport parking lot and the new one at the Fagatogo Market Place. Both sites are open from 8a.m. to 2p.m.
