Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Commerce is submitting a request to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the release of Community Development Block Grant funds in the amount of $241,122 under the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.

This is to undertake the Ofu Wharf Terminal project — to convert an existing structure into a new terminal facility to serve the traveling and transportation needs of the public.

According to a statement, DOC has determined that the project will have no significant impact on the human environment.

“Therefore, an Environmental Impact Statement under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) is not required.

“Additional project information is contained in an Environmental Review Record prepared by CDBG staff and it is on file at the Department of Commerce.”

According to DOC, HUD’s approval of the certification satisfies its responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act and related laws and authorities, and allows American Samoa’s Department of Commerce to use program funds.

Public comments were accepted through Thursday March 23 and objections to the release of funds will be considered.
