Election Office: Nov. 8 officially proclaimed Mid-Term Election date
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In an Aug. 16 public notice, and in accordance with local election law, Chief Election Officer Dr. Lealofi Uiagalelei officially proclaimed that the 2022 Midterm Election for American Samoa will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022 from 6a.m to p.m, at designated polling places in Representative Districts throughout the Territory.
As in previous election years, the list of the polling stations, which are usually church halls and guest houses, are released in advance of Election Day given time for voters to familiarize themselves with the polling stations.
Uiagalelei, also proclaimed, in the notice, that the mid term elections are held for:
• Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, for a term commencing Jan. 03, 2023 and expiring on Jan. 033rd, 2025;
• All seats for members of the House of Representatives, Legislature of American Samoa, for a term commencing Jan. 03, 2023 and expiring on Jan. 03rd, 2025; and
• Referendum on Amendments to the Revised Constitution of American Samoa as required by law.
Samoa News notes that amendments to the Revised Constitution will be discussed during the Constitutional Convention set for Aug. 29 to Sept. 02. And the approved amendments will be presented to the Governor to be officially presented to the Chief Election Officer, to be placed on the ballot for the next election.
Candidates wishing to run for public office are reminded that deadline for submission of petition and other required paperwork is at the close of business on Sept. 1 at the Election Office in Tafuna.
For the local House race, there are 20 elected members and the 21st member, is the non-voting delegate for Swains Islands. In past election years, the Election Office issues an official notice for date, time and venue of the “public meeting” for all Swains Islanders to select their delegate.
Meanwhile, the Election Office is seeking temporary election poll workers and currently accepting applications at the Election office or the ASG Department for Human Resources from Aug. 15 to Aug. 29.
Application forms must have your voter identification number and must be turned in to the Election Office on or before the deadline August 29, 2022.
The Election Office has been running paid advertising in Samoa News for temporary poll workers for the mid term election and yesterday issued the Mid Term election proclaimed in a paid advertisement, as well.
