Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On December 10, 2025, local authorities arrested Joseph Talia-Sagatonu following a reported domestic disturbance involving the destruction of household property at a family residence in the village of A’asu.

Mr. Talia-Sagatonu was later arrested and charged with:

Count 1: Property Damage in the Third Degree (DV), a class B misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to six months, a fine not to exceed $500, both imprisonment and fine.

The defendant’s bail was set at $500.

According to the affidavit filed in District Court on Dec 12th, officers at the Tafuna Police Substation (TPS) received a call from a woman reporting that her adult son had damaged several household items inside their home, and requested police assistance while also expressing concern over her son’s aggressive behavior.

Officers responded to the call and made contact with the reporting party upon arrival at the residence. She directed officers into the home, where visible signs of damage were immediately observed.

Police noted shattered glass scattered across the floor, a broken rice cooker, and a blue-and-white cooler that appeared to have been thrown to the ground multiple times.

Police continued interviewing the reporting party inside the residence, during which she directed officers to the suspect’s bedroom. She told officers that this was not the first time her son had broken household items during bouts of anger and requested that police take him into custody.

Officers knocked on the bedroom door several times but received no response. The door was then pushed open, and the suspect was observed sitting on his bed wearing earphones. Officers instructed him to exit the room, and he complied.

The suspect was apprehended without further incident and placed inside a police unit for transport to the TPS for further investigation.

According to the reporting party’s verbal and written statements, the suspect had earlier become upset after being unable to go out for a haircut. She stated that he reacted by breaking a rice cooker and several cups inside the home. When she later arrived home, she discovered the damage and attempted to call out to him, but he did not respond.

The reporting party further told police that her son had engaged in similar behavior in the past and that she and her husband had repeatedly experienced property damage when he became angry. She stated that her husband often felt threatened by the suspect’s aggressive behavior, particularly when family decisions did not align with what the suspect wanted. As a result, she contacted police and requested that charges be filed.

Upon arrival at the TPS, the suspect was advised of his constitutional rights. Police said he acknowledged understanding his rights but refused to provide a statement or answer any investigative questions.

Following the booking process, Joseph Talia-Siagatonu was transported to the Tafuna Correctional Facility, where he was confined pending his court appearance.

The defendant is identified as a 19 year-old U.S national.
