DHSS prevent child abuse wave

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Department of Human and Social Services (DHSS) staff held a wave last Friday, marking the final day of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in American Samoa, as well as “Victims Rights Week”.

Gov. Lemanu Peleti Palepoi Sialega Mauga issued a Mar. 31st proclamation declaring April as  National Child Abuse Prevention Month, saying that the “problem of child abuse and neglect significantly affects the health, economic and educational future of many of American Samoa’s children”.

The proclamation pointed out that DHSS is committed to involving government agencies, churches, businesses, media, parents, education institutions, policy makers, health care providers, and community-based organizations, in working diligently to provide protection, investigation, health care and education and services to children, and families in an effort to prevent child abuse and neglect.”

“Let us secure a future for our children that is bright and full of hope, opportunity and security,” the governor wrote.
