Gov. Lemanu's Mother passes

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A memorandum, dated Jan. 3, 2024, signed by he Lt. Gov. Talauega E. V. Ale announced the passing of the governor’s mother. “During this sad and difficult time, we extend to Governor Lemanu and the First Family our heartfelt condolences and prayers.”

There are no details offered about the governor’s mother’s passing.

Samoa News notes that in the recent Territorial Administration on Aging (TAOA) Christmas event, Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, Mrs. Iva Pedro of Swains Island, Lemanu’s mother, was honored for her “grand” age of 95 years old, along with eight others — in a Tribute to Resilience and Legacy.” They all received a special award from TAOA.

Gov. Lemanu in his opening remarks during the TAOA Christmas event said, "We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and today, we express our deepest gratitude to our elderly citizens.

“Your hard work has paved the way for the current generation, making it easier for us to build and shape our government. Thank you for your love, for nurturing our children, and for being the foundation of our community. Many of your children now work for the government, a testament to the enduring impact of your efforts.

“Your support and prayers from home do not go unnoticed; you are cherished, and your legacy lives on."

The memo also asks for the support for the governor by all government agencies, departments and office heads through “customary preparations”. A list is attached for the monetary donation and 1 fine mat for each department, office or agency. Monetary donations are listed at $350 or $300.
