Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — In a memorandum issued yesterday, Gov. Lemanu Peleti Palepoi Sialega Mauga ordered the United States flag to be flown at half-staff in honor of former US Vice President Walter Frederick “Fritz” Mondale, who passed away Monday at the age of 93.

The governor said the date of internment has not been disclosed at this time and a memorandum will be sent out when flags should be returned to full staff.

“As we reflect on the legacy of former Vice President Walter F. Mondale, let us take a moment to be grateful for all the great leaders who helped shape our democracy,” the governor said.

Lemanu’s order, is pursuant to a proclamation by US President Joe Biden, who describes Mondale, as “one of our Nation’s most dedicated patriots and public servants.”

Mondale served the people of Minnesota as their Attorney General from 1960-1964, as a United States Senator from 1964-1976, as Vice President of the United States from 1977-1981, and as the United States Ambassador to Japan from 1993-1996.

“As a Senator, he was instrumental in the passage of The Fair Housing Act to combat racial discrimination in housing, Title IX to provide more opportunities for women, and numerous laws to protect our environment,” Biden said. (Full details on www.whitehouse.gov)

Mondale was vice president under US President Jimmy Carter.
