Governor implements change in leadership at DPS
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula has made a significant leadership change by appointing Faʻalanaʻipupu Taase Sagapolutele as the Acting Police Commissioner for the Department of Public Safety.
This appointment is effective immediately and follows the resignation of Taʻaga Saite Moliga, who served in the role prior to this transition. There was reason given for the resignation of the former Police Commissioner .
The official announcement was made through a General Memorandum issued by the Governor on May 29, 2026. In the memorandum, the Governor expressed his heartfelt appreciation for Taʻaga's dedicated service and the valuable contributions he has made to the safety and well-being of the people of American Samoa throughout his tenure.
At the time of his appointment as Acting Police Commissioner, Faʻalanaʻipupu was serving as Deputy Commissioner, overseeing the Criminal Investigations Intelligence Bureau.
His extensive experience and leadership in this vital sector of the department are expected to provide much-needed continuity and stability as he embarks on his new role. The Governor, along with the community, looks forward to his strategic direction as the department navigates the challenges ahead.
Falanaʻipupu, who is originally from Samoa, has a diverse background as a former educator and a dedicated member of the U.S. Army. At the time of his appointment, he had amassed an impressive 36 years of service with the Department of Public Safety, demonstrating a long-term commitment to public safety and community welfare.
He began his career in law enforcement as a police officer, gradually advancing through the ranks due to his hard work and dedication. Prior to his appointment, he served as Deputy Commissioner for over a decade, contributing significantly to the department's operations during the Lolo and Lemanu Administration. His deep understanding of the department's challenges, combined with his leadership experience, positions him well to lead effectively at this critical time.
