Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — At Monday’s cabinet meeting, Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga instructed the American Samoa Shipyard Service Authority board of directors to find money to cover payroll in order to retain all current employees of the shipyard, which has been out out of commission since late last year due to a derailment incident now awaiting repairs.

According to the governor, some shipyard workers have gone to the Governor’s Office looking for jobs and when asked what happened, the workers informed the governor they are being let-go soon.

Lolo told the board to find money to keep all workers on the payroll. He said if these workers are let go, they will end up coming back to the government to look for jobs.

It is for “us to help maintain the current staff so these workers have money to feed their families and are still employed at the shipyard,” he said.
