Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating the death of an elderly woman found on the dirt road heading into Kokoland.

It appears to be a “hit and run” says a senior police officer who spoke anonymously as he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Samoa News reached out to Deputy Police Commissioner Fo’ifua Jr Fo’ifua for comments but efforts were unsuccessful, after messages left were not returned as of press time.

In the meantime, police officers were seen at Kokoland Tuesday afternoon — at where the authorities believe the woman was struck by a car.

The incident occurred the week before White Sunday and to date police have no leads.

However according to a senior officer, Criminal Investigation Division investigators are obtaining video footage from the stores around the area for information on how this woman died.

The woman lived in Kokoland and was often seen on the main road picking up trash in the hot sun.

“Information from the investigators is that the injuries sustained by the woman lean towards a traffic accident, as if she were struck by a vehicle and was left for dead,” said a senior police officer.
