Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — During yesterday’s House session, Fofo Faipule Andra Tereise Samoa provided an update on the COVID-19 cases, saying that there were three new COVID-19 related deaths as of Mar. 30 — with the eldest at age 63 and the youngest a 29-year old female.

Samoa along with Faipule Sam Meleisea are the House members on the COVID-19 Task Force, which holds a virtual briefing daily. The Fofo faipule provides updates daily during House sessions.

In her latest update, Samoa informed her colleagues that all the deceased had other existing medical issues. And the new fatalities now bring American Samoa’s total to seven COVID-19 related deaths as of Mar. 30 — with overall total positives at 4,206 since the community spread was first recorded on Feb. 21.

Faipule Ape Mike Asifoa noted with concern the surge in American Samoa and urged the community to make the requirements for protection from the deadly virus a priority, especially for the older population with other health issues.

There’s been no update on the COVID count from the Dept. of Health or the Emergency Operations Center for March 29 or 30.

Speaking during a virtual press conference this week, Lt. Gov. Talauega Eleasalo Ale says that more positive cases are projected this week — which is the “week we expect our surge to peak. We are expected to look at numbers above 300 and close to 400 daily this week.”

“As positive rates continue, the chances and the possibilities for fatalities increase,” he said.
