Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — lndependence Day, July 4, will be observed as a holiday in American Samoa and Gov. Pulaali’i Nikolao Pula issued a memorandum yesterday saying that all government offices will be closed and normal operations will be suspended on that day.

When the nation's founders were gathering to proclaim independence from what was at the time, one of the most powerful nations in the world, there was much to fear. Through thoughtful deliberation, grit and determination the founders pressed forward with their Declaration in the face of certain war with a much more powerful nation. As we celebrate this Fourth of July, let us all take a moment to appreciate the principles that birthed the freedoms we enjoy today — popular sovereignty, equality before the law, and guaranteed Constitutional rights — these principles that generations of Americans have bled and died for. On this holiday, please remember and reflect on the values that continue to shape the United States of America.

Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata joined with the governor and issued the following statement celebrating U.S. Independence Day:

“Happy Fourth of July! Today we stand with millions of Americans in celebrating the creation of a great and free nation, and commemorating the historic Declaration of Independence that announced a new nation to the world.

“American Samoa proudly became a part of the United States in 1900, taking part as the U.S. has held a major leadership role in the free world, and working with allies to encourage liberty and human rights around the world. We salute the honorable and patriotic service of thousands of our Toa o Samoa, past and present. Fa’afetai tele to all the brave men and women serving in many places and our military families at home for your sacrifice!

“The founders of the United States in 1776 had a vision for an exceptional nation where the people had God-given rights and the responsibility in determining their own destiny. Our own matai forefathers in 1900 and 1904 had in mind a vision of their own that included long-term protection and freedom for our people. Have a joyous holiday, and may God bless American Samoa and the United States!”

Employees of the American Samoa Government who are not required to perform essential services shall be excused from their duties. Employees required to report for duty on that day will receive holiday wages in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Samoa News will not publish tomorrow, we will print again on Monday.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend. Happy Independence Day!
