Calls on AS people to come together to move gov’t forward

Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga used his speech at yesterday’s opening of the three-day 7th Bilateral Health Summit of the two Samoas to call on the people of American Samoa to come together to move the government forward, now that the 2016 general election is over and the people have spoken through their vote.

The summit is hosted this year by American Samoa at the Gov. H. Rex Lee Auditorium, where Lemanu was introduced as not only the lieutenant governor but as re-elected to the same post for the next four years — following last Tuesday’s election — along with Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga.

Lemanu delivered special remarks at yesterday’s opening on behalf of the governor and in the middle of his speech the lieutenant governor raised the outcome of the general election, saying that this is the first time American Samoa has hosted the gathering right after the election and this was a chance — on behalf of the governor — to speak briefly on the election.

To the people of American Samoa who attended yesterday’s opening, Lemanu thanked them for taking time to participate in the health summit. He also said that Tutuila and Manu’a held its elections last week and whatever the outcome that was that issue — and is now a thing of the past and he “prayed with a humility” that the people of American Samoa will now come together to develop the territory and the government going forward.

Among local residents who attended the summit, which is open to the public was Salanoa Iuni Maeva Saveena, the candidate for lieutenant governor in the Tuika and Salanoa gubernatorial team.

In his remarks, Lemanu specifically thanked Salanoa for his attendance and support of the summit to improve the health care of the people of the two Samoas. He said it’s the wishes and hopes of both he and the governor to put aside the past and for everyone to come together to carry out the work of the Lord and that is to “serve our people.”

When asked by Samoa News after the opening session, Salanoa expressed his sincere appreciation to the fact that he was able to attend and be a part of the summit and that it’s very important for residents and people to come together to work on ways to improve the health care service for American Samoa.

Also in attendance at the opening were representatives of local groups and coalitions working in the health care service.
