LHS vice principal reports break in and burglary

Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — On December 23, 2034, Leone High School (LHS) vice principal called the Tafuna Police Substation (TPS) and reported a break in at LHS campus. A suspect allegedly broke into the principal’s office and stole a laptop and a speaker.

The suspect confessed to stealing the items and was arrested and later charged with:

Count 1: Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C felony punishable by imprisonment not to exceed seven years, a fine of not more than $5,000, or both imprisonment and fine;

Count 2: Stealing, a class C felony punishable by imprisonment not to exceed seven years, a fine of not more than $5,000, or an amount equal to twice the amount of gain from the commission of a crime up to a maximum of $20,000, or both imprisonment and fine; and,

Count 3: Trespass, a class B misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for up to six months, a fine of $500, or both.

The defendant’s bail was set at $10,000.

According to the court affidavit, on Dec. 23rd, at about 9:20 a.m., (LHS) vice-principal (VP) contacted the TPS and reported a break-in at the principal’s office.

Police officers responded to the call and upon arrival at the scene, they met up with the VP who briefed them on what they discovered. The VP also mentioned a male individual known as Kyshawn Fia who was involved in the recent break-ins. The officers took photos of the point of entry and the scene.

The reporter (VP) later led the officers to where the suspect resides with his grandma.

Upon arrival at the suspect’s residence, they met with the suspect and conducted an interview about the break-in incident. The suspect confessed that “he entered unlawfully into the principal’s office and stole a speaker and a gold book pro laptop”. The suspect later mentioned that he gave the stolen items to his mother.

The suspect was apprehended and placed into the police unit. Police then proceeded to the suspect’s mother’s house where she returned the stolen items to the officers.

Fia was transported to the TPS for further investigation.

During the VP’s interview, he stated that he went to LHS to check their office and he noticed that the principal’s office was open. Moreover, the front window cover was pried off from the window and three glass louvers were missing on the window. He went inside and noticed that the speaker and laptop were missing on the meeting table inside the principal’s office. He also stated that he was suspicious of a male individual known as Kyshawn Fia who was involved in the previous break-in in the month of November 2024.

The VP also said that the last time he brought the suspect into his office for questioning about the previous break-in he admitted that he did it.

The suspect's mother also made a statement where she stated that she took the stolen items from the suspect when the VP came to her mother’s house and informed them about the allegations. She explained that she kept the items and waited till the school started again to return it back to the LHS office.

The suspect was Mirandized and agreed to make a statement.

According to the suspect, on Friday, Dec. 20th, at around 1:00 a.m., he went inside the LHS campus towards the principal's office. To break-in to the office, he unscrewed the window cover using a pair of scissors and took out the 3 louvers from the window. He gained entrance and took the gold book pro laptop and a speaker. When the suspect was asked why he broke into the principal’s office, he replied that “his mind told him so”.

The stolen items were returned to the VP at the TPS.

The suspect was later booked and confined at the Tafuna Correctional Facility awaiting the next available sitting of the District Court.

The suspect is identified as an 18-year-old U.S citizen.
