Long-awaited sports facilities at Onesosopo Park finally given the green light
Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — The long-awaited sports facilities at Onesosopo Park were finally given the green light on Wednesday morning, marked by a groundbreaking ceremony that signaled the start of construction on a new football field, sports complex, and modern playground facilities, some of which are already nearing completion.
The ceremony marked the culmination of many years of anticipation, patience, and repeated setbacks — including changes in plans, postponements, cancellations, and much disappointment. Since the original park was first envisioned in 1984 and completed in 1990, the long-promised football field and sports facilities remained unrealized — until Wednesday morning.
In his remarks, Governor Pulaalii Nikolao Pula stated that the site carries a proud and enduring legacy and has become a cornerstone of the Eastern District.
“A place where generations have come together to play, learn, and grow,” said Governor Pula. “Today, we review that legacy and reaffirm our commitment to providing spaces that strengthen the bonds of family and community. We acknowledge the deep history and the dedication that have defined the journey of Onesosopo Park.”
The governor expressed profound gratitude to all personnel, departments, and community members who worked tirelessly to make the vision a reality. He also acknowledged previous administrations whose planning and perseverance laid the foundation and secured the vital resources to bring about the event.
"The new sports complex represents more than field and facilities," Governor Pula declared. "It is our investment in our people. It stands as a symbol of hope, health, and opportunity for our children and our families. Through this project, we are building more than structures, we are building a stronger, healthier, and more united community.
"As we move forward, let us do so with enthusiasm, purpose, and pride, guided by the words that captured the spirit of this moment from the same soil built our past, we rise again stronger, greener, and together. Let the construction begin!" he concluded to loud applause.
In attendance were Senate Vice President Magalei Logovii, invited guests, and Aua village matai, including Faipule Faimealelei Anthony Allen and Senator Ponausuia Luce Ponausuia, as well as members of the clergy.
Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, Andrew Pelesasa — who is from Aua village — addressed the gathering and acknowledged the project’s funding sources. He noted that the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is supporting the development of the new facilities, while the children’s playground, now nearing completion, is being constructed by Dean Hudson of MOS Ventures through ARPA funding.
The newly upgraded playground at Onesosopo Park boasts a 10-foot tower equipped with slides, swings, climbers, and shaded platforms — specially designed to engage and challenge older children. This vibrant addition to the park is also made possible through funding from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, with MOS Ventures leading the project as contractor.
The Onesosopo Park Sports Complex, a major investment aimed at transforming the east side into a vibrant hub for recreation and community engagement, was officially dedicated with the ground breaking performed buy Governor Pulaalii, Senate VP Magalei, government officials, Aua village matais, and prominent members of the community.
The upcoming complex will feature a football field, bleachers, parking areas, walking trails, and new restrooms.
Designed as an open-air venue with seating for approximately 80 to 120 spectators, the facility will support both athletic events and public gatherings. Happy Construction also known as Rainbow is set to lead the $4.2 million year-long project once procurement and final contracts are secured.
In parallel with the playground upgrades, the department has also begun replacing restroom doors and installing baby-changing stations across multiple park sites. These enhancements are funded through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and reflect the department’s commitment to improving accessibility and family-friendly amenities.
