Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man who allegedly told police that he had to smoke ice so he could stay awake has been arrested and criminally charged.

Onosa'i Navelika made his initial appearance in District Court last Friday morning. He is currently in custody at the Territorial Correctional Facility (TCF) in Tafuna.

According to the criminal complaint, a man who was in the LBJ Medical Center parking lot notified hospital security after he noticed a man smoking a pipe in a parked vehicle.

Hospital security came out to investigate and eventually, police were called for assistance.

It is alleged that Navelika — while in his vehicle — tried to conceal the pipe between his legs when he was confronted by authorities, who had come knocking on the window.

The pipe ended up in the driver's side door handle, where police found it.

When questioned, Navelika allegedly told investigators that he was at the hospital because his grandchild is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and he needed to smoke ice so he can stay awake.

Navelika is represented by Assistant Public Defender Anna Wells.
