Pago Pago, AMERICAN SAMOA — A man from Nu’uuli was arrested last week and charged for allegedly assaulting his wife, and yelling profanities in the presence of his four children, his mother in law, and two aunties who were all inside the home at the time.

The defendant, 40, is facing charges of private peace disturbance and 3rd degree assault, both class A misdemeanors.

He made his initial appearance in District Court this week where he pled not guilty. He was released on his own recognizance subject to conditions that he maintain the peace at home and not display any more threatening behavior towards his wife, children, and in-laws.

According to the court affidavit, it was on Friday night, July 27 that the defendant's wife contacted police for assistance in Nuuuli. She claimed her husband was intoxicated and acting unruly.

Police officers who responded to the call said that as soon as the defendant saw police units in the area, he fled and ran to the other side of the village. Moments later, he was captured and escorted back to the area where the cops were parked.

Police say the defendant reeked of alcohol.

When questioned by authorities, the victim said her husband was intoxicated from two nights prior to the alleged incident. She said he was extremely drunk and was shouting cuss words in their home.

She alleges that when she tried to calm her husband, he slapped her on the left side of her face. She said she had to call the cops because her husband was out of control and she was concerned for her family's safety.
